India has always been one of the biggest powerhouses in T20 cricket. However, when it comes to the T20 World Cup, Team Blue don’t have a lot of hardware to prove it, not since their first victory in 2007.
Nevertheless, India still has the best win percentage at the event out of all nations, with more than one appearance, having won 63.95% of their matches. The problem is they’ve only reached the final twice, beating Pakistan in 2007 and coming up short against Sri Lanka in 2014.
The last three editions of the T20 World Cup have been somewhat of a disappointment for the Men in Blue. India finally got to host the T20 World Cup in 2016 and was a clear favourite to win, but lost to the West Indies in the semifinals. This still didn’t prevent Virat Kohli from being named player of the series.
In the 2021 tournament, India was eliminated in the Super 12 group stage after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand, while the 2022 edition saw the team reach the semifinals again, only to get knocked out by the eventual champions, England.
Team India Roster for the T20 World Cup 2024
The team was selected by coach Rahul Dravid who is at the end of his three-year term at the helm of India’s squad. BCCI is actively looking for Dravid’s replacement, but a win at the World Cup could potentially keep him in charge.

India announced their 15-men roster (plus reserves) for this year’s ICC T20 World Cup on April 30. The captain, Rohit Sharma, will lead the team, with notable names on the list being vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, Jasprit Bumrah, and others.
The roster composition seems expected, with KL Rahul being the only notable name missing, considering his role in India’s last two WC campaigns.
Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson were chosen as the team’s wicketkeepers. Pant will be returning to the international stage for the first time since the 2022 car crash that sidelined him for over a year.
All-rounder Shivam Dube was another expected call, especially considering his masterful 2024 IPL season performances for the Chennai Super Kings, during which he posted an impressive strike rate of 170 with 389 runs. The pace bowlers will be led by Jasprit Bumrah, supported by Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.
Team Blue Odds Quick DepositTeam Blue At The CWC 2024: Head-2-Head Predictions
For the first time, this year’s T20 World Cup will feature 20 different nations. The tournament will first go into a round-robin stage, with the teams split into four groups. The top two teams from each group will progress into the Super 8s, divided into two groups with four teams. The top two squads from these groups will then progress to the elimination round, starting with the semifinals.
India was drawn into Group A alongside the neighbouring rivals Pakistan, the United States, Canada, and Ireland. India’s first match will be against the Irish on May 5, taking place at the temporarily built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The team will play their next two matches at the same venue against Pakistan and the US on June 9 and June 12, respectively. Meanwhile, the final group stage match between India and Canada will take place at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 15.
The Men in Blue should have a relatively easy task of qualifying for the Super 8s. Landslide victories are expected against Ireland, the USA, and Canada. While Pakistan could potentially give India some trouble, a win would be considered a huge upset.
If India progresses atop Group A, they will likely end in a Super 8 group with either Australia and England, West Indies and New Zealand, and Sri Lanka.
Here are some of the key H2H stats between India and its potential rivals at the upcoming T20 World Cup.
India vs Ireland
India has never lost a T20 cricket game against their first rival at this year’s WC. The last duel between the two took place on August 20, 2023, with India winning by 33 runs. Interestingly, six of the seven matches between India and Ireland were held in Dublin, with only their first international game taking place at a neutral ground in Nottingham.

India has held Pakistan’s number for most of their T20I matchups. India won eight times, and Pakistan managed to pull out a victory thrice, while their very first duel back in 2007 ended in a tie.
This will be the third straight World Cup, where we’ll see India facing Pakistan. Shaheen blew out India at the 2021 edition of the T20 WC, and Pakistan’s side claimed a 10-wicket victory, effectively knocking India out of the tournament (on a side note, this was the 200th international cricket match between the two). However, India got their revenge the next year in Melbourne, beating Pakistan by four wickets to stay ahead in their group.

The India vs USA match in Group A at the upcoming T20 World Cup will mark the first meeting between the two countries in this cricket format. Despite being the hosts, the Americans are one of the tournament’s underdogs, and this will be their very first showing at the T20 WC. It’s still worth noting that the USA has won all four of their last Test Series matches against group rivals Canada.

India has also never played a T20 match against Canada. The Canadians are overwhelming underdogs in their first World Cup. Oman and Uganda are the only two nations with longer winning odds.

India and England are fierce rivals across all cricket formats, and T20 internationals are no exception. The two have met 23 times in T20 matches, with India winning on 12 occasions. They haven’t met in this format since 2022 and the T20 WC semi-finals in Adelaide, which England won by ten wickets.

The two could potentially meet in the Super 8 group. India has a really good H2H record against the powerhouse from Down Under, beating them 19 times in 31 encounters. What’s more, India won six of their last seven T20 matches against Australia, although, to be fair, India had a home-ground advantage over most of them. The two met three times at the T20 World Cup, with India winning every time. Their last WC duel was in the 2016 Super 10 group stage, which India won by six wickets.

India can also meet the other host, West Indies, at some point during the tournament. India has beaten the joint Caribbean nations 19 times out of 30 T20 outings. However, West Indies have had more success against their fierce rivals at the World Cup, winning three of four. Among these was their big semi-final duel in India at the 2016 WC, which West Indies won by seven wickets.

The India vs South Africa cricket rivalry is set to reignite at the T20 World Cup 2024, promising another chapter of thrilling contests between these two formidable teams. Historically, their clashes have delivered memorable moments, such as India's dramatic win in the 2007 T20 World Cup semifinal, where Yuvraj Singh's blistering 70 off 30 balls stood out. In the 2012 T20 World Cup, South Africa's AB de Villiers' explosive batting almost snatched victory before India's disciplined bowling prevailed. More recently, during the 2022 series, both teams showcased their prowess with nail-biting finishes and standout performances from players like Virat Kohli and Kagiso Rabada. As they prepare to face off in 2024, fans anticipate another high-octane encounter filled with spectacular cricketing feats.
